Romy Barra is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). She holds a BFA from Concordia University in Art History and Studio Arts (2018). Romy is a maximalist and uses satire in her painting and drawings as a vehicle to explore social issues in our contemporary landscape. Inspired by photographer Nan Goldin, who depicted LGBTQIA+ subcultures through portraits of her friends and inner circle, Romy uses counter-culture in Montreal as her main source of inspiration. Romy takes visual inspiration from dive bars, basement venues, and the studio-apartments-turned-recording-studios her friends’ live in.

Romy currently works as a studio assistant for RLH, and was formerly the Director and Curator of Puces POP. Her work has been published in Celluloid Lunch (2020), on display at Espace POP (2018), and Concordia University's Gallery X (2018). She has co-curated shows at Gham and Dafe (2018), and the MAI Gallery for Nuit Blanche (2017).
